Workshop objectives

This introductory workshop intends to provide conceptual knowledge and practical skills of statistical tools as applied to the Social Sciences. At the end of the workshop, participants will be familiar with the central concepts of statistics such as database management tasks, descriptive statistics, and basic inferential statistics for comparisons and correlations.

This workshop will have laboratory sessions to complement the theoretical learning.  Participants will apply theoretical knowledge to a variety of typical Social Science problems using the Statistical Package SPSS.

 

Workshop content:

This workshop will include:

  • Basic concepts: Research designs; measurement in social Sciences; data and data production; Importance of statistical tools in research; Parametric and Non-parametric statistical tests.

  • Data exploration and diagnosis: Numerical and graphical presentation

  • Statistical analysis: Descriptive statistics; comparing two and several means (t-test and ANOVA); Correlation; Regression; Chi-square and other non-parametric tests.
